Do’s and Don’ts When Accepting Checks |Forms | FAQ

DO--Establish identity with a picture ID (driver's license or state ID card). Write on the check the driver's license or ID card number, social security number (if available), and date of birth. We may not be able to prosecute without ID information on the check!

DO-- Compare all information on the check--name and address--that are on the writer's picture ID.

DO-- Make sure the check is filled out. The check should be signed in your presence. Verify the address for notification purposes.

DO-- Record the initials and employee identification number (if applicable) on the check at the time of acceptation. This will assist merchants in determining if an employee can identify the bad check writer when charges are filed.

DON'T-- Accept the check if the name printed on the check is not the name of the person writing it.

DON'T-- Agree to hold the check or take a postdated check. We cannot prosecute under these circumstances.

DON'T-- Accept partial payment on a bad check you have received. We cannot prosecute where you have taken partial payment on a bad check.

DON'T-- Accept two Party checks.
